Mary and Max is a 2009 Australian stop-motion animatedtragicomedy film written and directed by Adam Elliot and was his first animated feature film. The film was produced by Melanie Coombs and Melodrama Pictures with music by Dale Cornelius. The voice cast includes Philip Seymour Hoffman, Toni Collette, Eric Bana and Bethany Whitmore, with narration provided by Barry Humphries.
The film follows the lives and friendship of two unlikely pen-pals; Mary, a lonely Australian girl, and Max, a middle-aged American man with Asperger syndrome. The film is inspired by Elliot's relationship with his "pen-friend" in New York whom he has been writing to for over twenty years.
The film premiered on the opening night of the 2009 Sundance Film Festival on 15 January 2009. The film won the Annecy Cristal in June 2009 from the Annecy International Animated Film Festival and Best Animated Feature Film at the Asia Pacific Screen Awards in November 2009. The film was theatrically released on 9 April 2009, by Icon Entertainment International; it received acclaim from critics.

Bethany Whitmore was born 7 December 1999 and is the youngest of two children. Bethany lived in the leafy suburbs of Melbourne before heading to Singapore where she attended Stamford American International School. Having returned to Melbourne in 2014, Bethany continued to pursue her passion for performing arts. In 2017 Bethany was nominated for Best Lead Actress for her role of Greta Driscoll in the acclaimed feature film Girl Asleep (2015) by the Australian Film Critics Association & Film Critics Circle of Australia. In 2018 Bethany traveled to London on the 16th Street Actors Scholarship to train at the Royal Academy of Performing Arts in Shakespeare and also flew to Los Angeles as a 2018 top ten finalist for the prestigious 10th year anniversary Heath Ledger Scholarship #HLS10.
Bethany's first acting opportunity came when she was 6 years old, at her very first audition, she won the role of 5-year-old "Jaden" in the US miniseries The Starter Wife (2007), which stars Debra Messing, and Judy Davis.
