Biografie
[bewerken | brontekst bewerken]Big Maybelle zong reeds als kind in het kerkkoor van de Church of God in Christ. Op 9-jarige leeftijd won ze een zangconcours bij het Memphis Cotton Carnival. Ze begon daarna haar carrière als professionele zangeres in 1936. Haar eerste plaatopnamen met het orkest van Christine Chatman[5] was Hurry, Hurry op 6 april 1944 bij Decca Records. Eigen plaatopnamen ontstonden echter pas in november 1947, toen ze op korte termijn voor drie singles zong bij King Records. Tussen 1947 en 1950 zong ze in het orkest van Tiny Bradshaw.
Haar eerste hitsucces kwam op 8 oktober 1952 na de wissel naar Okeh Records met Gabbin' Blues, dat zich kon plaatsten in de r&b-hitlijst (#3). Ze kon hier nog twee verdere singles in de top 10 plaatsen en bleef het label trouw tot eind 1955. Tijdens deze periode bij Okeh Records verscheen ook het origineel van Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On, later een hit voor Jerry Lee Lewis.
