Early life and family[]
Marsden was born in Stillwater, Oklahoma, the son of Kathleen (née Scholtz) and James Luther Marsden. His father, a food safety advisor to LexiGene Industries, and his mother, a nutritionist, divorced when he was nine years old.
He has four siblings: two younger sisters and two brothers. He attended Hefner Middle School and Putnam City North High School, in Oklahoma City, and later went on to attend Oklahoma State University, where he studied broadcast journalism. H

After one year of college, Marsden left for Los Angeles to focus on acting full time. His first roles included small parts on “The Nanny,” “Saved by the Bell: The New Class” (both in ) and “Touched by an Angel” in From to Marsden starred in the ABC series “Second Noah” which was about a veterinarian in Busch Gardens, Fla. The actor became more of a household name after landing a recurring role on "Ally McBeal" and starring opposite Katie Holmes in the feature film “Disturbing Behavior.” His big break was getting cast as Scott Summer ,aka Cyclops, in the X-Men live action film franchise which includes “X-Men” (), “X2” () and “X-Men: The Last Stand” ().
