Some people make pilgrimages to Memphis simply to go to Graceland, America’s second most-famous house. (Hint: The other one’s also white.) A friend of mine and her sisters did that and they aren’t even Elvis fans. Traipsing around Elvis’ gaudy home is just a thing to do, whether out of love or ironic detachment.

I wanted to visit one day, less for any particular reason than because the city, despite its Mid-South humidity, seemed cool.
