Early Life and Education
Most of Thomas Campbell's life prior to the publication of the Declaration and Address transpired in Northern Ireland. Biographical sources for his early years in Ireland are limited and there is much uncertainty about the chronology of these early events. Much of the standard biographical information in the major histories of the Movement reflects more inferences and deductions than verifiable facts. My conclusions concerning the sequence and nature of these early experiences in Ireland continue this tradition and are simply suggestive, based on what makes sense to me from the sparse specific evidence. 3 Thomas Campbell was born on February 1, 1763, near Newry in County Down, Northern Ireland (Ulster). His father was a Roman Catholic who converted to Anglicanism at some point related to his military service. Little is known of his mother; one can speculate, however, that Campbell's inclination toward Presbyterianism came from her. Campbell, presumably in his late teens, affiliated with the Antiburgher faction of the Associate Synod of the Church of Scotland (Seceders). After what he perceived as an electing conversion experience, he committed h
